We’re getting the hang of this “conversation” racket in our second Crisman Show podcast. Now for the pertinent run-down on linkage and mad love — thanks to all our guests and featured musicians! If you like what you hear and want in on the action, please check out our FundRazr (powered by PayPal).

As you can see by the shape of my head, there has been much a brewing here in Crisman land. First, I realized I have owned SarahCrisman.com for years, so if you type said URL into your browser, you’ll find yourself right here! Someday I’ll have Modern Whole build me an online wonderland. Wordpress will do in the meantime.
Big ups to my personal hair guru, Mattie Michelle (at Michelle Patrick Salon, Dallas) for being a Finalist in the Davines Worldwide Hair Tour. She and I will be appearing at the Jackie Gleason Theater in Miami next January. My job is to sit still while Mattie does my hair; but if a microphone comes anywhere near my face — POW! Right in the Kisser — I’m telling a joke.
Speaking of microphones near my face: If you are in the Dallas area September 16, please help me welcome the Carolina Chocolate Drops to the Granada Theater. You got a taste for something less fancy than folk music? I’ll be telling jokes next to a parking meter in Deep Ellum at Noon (Stage Four) as part of PARK(ing) Day Dallas 2011. Something entertaining is bound to happen.
While we get all our ducks in a row, please to enjoy the podcast manifestation of the Crisman Show.
If I had a dime. Seriously, Twitter, just one dime for every time someone recognizes me out in the world because they are familiar with @sarah_crisman and my twin flame, Snarky Puppy. It’s pretty awesome, actually. My Twitter feed is chock-full of wonderful people with clever ears from all over the world. No matter what city I find myself in — from Dallas to Montreal, Philly, NY, and everywhere in between — I get to meet these people every day. They are more of a blessing than they realize.
If you are one of my said followers (I love you), you have no doubt noticed my propensity for Pup-related Tweets. This is only partially my fault. I can’t help but ReTweet when another soul has fallen under the Snark. Having labored happily under this booty/brain spell for several years now, I feel a great responsibility to help you navigate (dizzy spells are to be expected). It’s okay to love this band that much. It’s completely natural to feel the overwhelming confusion of mind-blowing grooves and supernatural rhythm. Rest assured you have someone to talk to when your friends tell you to stop talking about Snarky Puppy — I will listen. And I’ll very likely RT you. Your support matters to me, it matters to the family, and it matters to the music.
I encourage this Twitter revolution. When the spirit moves and you just have to tell your Tweeps about how this music has taken hold, throw in the hashtag #PupCulture. I will feature this feed here on my blog, plus RT and conversate, and select a few each week of the tour to recap the Pup’s crawl across the US/Canada. You may even wind up in my book — your voice is important to this sound. Ya dig?
Without further adieu, may I introduce the Tweeps who inspired this wicked conversation. Follow them. They cool.
@RaySMAASHdaBass: Well snarky puppy did me pretty damn good this weekend. It made me think if music ain’t grooving what you doing.
@PsalmistKing: Snarky Puppy – Tell Your Friends. Nuff said.
@KalibTracks: @rayrayluvsmusic put me on to “snarky puppy”, I bought 1 album… I put my homeboy on to them & he bought all they albums!
@Kibabot3000: Also, Snarky Puppy is in fact the snarkiest…
@jrosonet: I’m currently being amazed by Snarky Puppy at the Thirsty Hippo. Noone in hattiesburg has a right to be anywhere else tonight. Amazing.
@philaud: Snarky Puppy is the funkiest band I have heard in…maybe ever. wow.
Now see what happens when a tune written on piano is played sans keys… 34 Klezma (written by Bill Laurance) played at Fat Tuesday’s (filmed by fonky YouTube User ChrisGotFunk).
Living among the wild of musicians has taken an alarming and beautiful toll on my life. I lived in Dallas for 16 years before it ever felt like home. It wasn’t until Mike League started playing with Bernard Wright and Jason “JT” Thomas at Gezellig that I was able to appreciate the rich culture inherent to this urban-small town. That was when I found the soul of Dallas.
Just to give you a small taste of how the South spoils me: I have listened to Bernard Wright play at least once a week for the past nine weeks running. You can imagine how fantastically warped my ears are now — that’s some real shit! Consequently, the people I run around with in my day-to-day routine also happen to be the musicians I turn to when I need a hit of current sonic obsessions: Erykah Badu, Mama’s Gun; Geno Young, Ear Hustler; Snarky Puppy, Tell Your Friends; D’Angelo, VooDoo — Big D fingerprints all over every last one of ‘em! I am blessed beyond measure to experience the dynamic energy of this community. They’ve turned me into quite the monster.
One thing I’ve picked up from running is this crew is the birthday hustle (we’re all still recovering from Shaun Martin’s August birthday). I’m turning 30 on September 12th. We’re throwing down four parties in four cities to celebrate this incredible life we have in 2010. Bernard Wright Trio at Hailey’s (Denton); The Black and Blues at Where House (Fort Worth); Shaun Martin’s Go Go Party at Green Elephant (Dallas); and a supa-fly NYC jam session hosted by Bob Lanzetti, Michael League, and Dana Hawkins — Mike Gamble, Adam Schatz, Maz, Boomtown, Dusty… the whole NY Snarky Puppy crew will all be in the house. Sense a pattern? 30′s goin’ hard.
Happy September, y’all. I’ll see you at the shows.
Going to sleep and other worlds I’ve seen
Where my thoughts turn into thangs
Magical, intangible, and know how fresh we would be
If we took our dreams seriously
(if you aren’t throwin’ down with us in BK, go see Georgia Anne Muldrow at the Prophet Bar on September 15).
